5 Ways to Adapt to Change

Change is the only constant in life. One’s ability to adapt to those changes will determine your success in life — Benjamin Franklin

They say the only constant in life is change. When we resist this simple life truth we often suffer. We cannot run from change but instead, we must learn how to move through it with greater ease and openness. When we can embrace rather than oppose change, we set ourselves up for greater success and well-being.

We can experience change in several different areas of one’s life. When we can recognize and accept change in these different areas of life, we can be prepared to be more flexible. We must become more creative in our thinking, remain optimistic and realistic while increasing our emotional intelligence.

Major Areas of Change

1.Professionally

Workplaces are changes, especially with the current pandemic. New challenges, uncertainties, and circumstances are arising. Jobs are morphing, disappearing, and technology is changing. Learning to be flexible, creative, and optimistic in the workplace is essential to success. Talk to a coach, manager, or mentor to get advice on how to adapt if you find yourself becoming stuck.

2.Personally

Although part of us remains the same parts of us change with time. Experiences we go through impact us in different ways and we begin to change. Our beliefs, values, and ideas may change over time as we go through life. Recognizing these changes and developing greater self-awareness will help you integrate these modifications with greater ease.

3.Emotionally

It is a myth to believe we are supposed to feel positive all the time. Happiness is not just positive emotions but rather the ability to feel all emotions and know that no matter what you are going to be okay. Many people suffer from anxiety and depression because they are unable to process emotional changes in a healthy and constructive way. When you can learn to not fear the harder emotions one does not get stuck in them but rather can go with the flow of emotions while trusting they will always be okay. If you need help dealing with your emotions, it’s ok to talk to a therapist. Talking to a Therapist can also teach communication skills to convey your emotions. Therapy can promote one’s self-esteem, relationships, and outlook on life.

4.Physically

Many of us experience changes in our physical health and ability. As we age our physical body begins to change. Also, if we are faced with an injury, disease, or disorder the body can go through drastic changes. Many people may resist these changes by disconnected from the body and instead of tuning in and nurturing the body they may begin to numb out or avoid what the body needs or is capable of. Take control of your health and fitness by eating better and incorporating exercise in your life. Feel lost in this department? 5.Challenging Times

Life is famous for throwing many different curve balls at us. Just as we adapt to one change there maybe another. We may experience challenges in our relationships, with our health, finances, trauma, or just a build-up of too much stress over time. When this occurs, it is important to notice and savor the good parts of life. We are wired to notice the negative and we must consciously take time to notice the good to help us process and move through change.

Regardless of what changes you are struggling with it is important to remember to take care of yourself through it. If we do not fill our cup back up, we will burn out and lose the ability to navigate the challenges and changes we experience in life. Many people do not realize the importance of taking care of oneself as the source of our resilience and ability to adapt to change.
