International Women’s day is also known by the United Nations (UN) Day for Women’s Rights and International peace around the world. March 8th is a day we celebrate women’s achievements throughout history and worldwide. It is a day that recognizes and commemorates the social, economic, political and cultural achievements of women globally. This day also is a call for action concerning gender parity. It is a day about unity, reflection, advocacy, and action. The first international women’s day was held in 1911 and has been celebrated since. This day belongs to everyone who believes and cares about human rights.
We celebrate and take notice of International Women’s Day to honor those that have suffered due to the inequality that still exists worldwide between genders but also to celebrate the accomplishments of women worldwide. To take recognition of what we have accomplished despite the odds and to come together for a brighter more equal future.
Women were not granted the right to vote until 1920, it wasn’t until 1960 that women could legally open a bank account, it wasn’t until 1969 when the Divorce Reform Act was passed that women could divorce their husbands without having to prove adultery, it wasn’t until 1974 women could get a credit card without their husband signatures, it wasn’t until 1993 that it was illegal to rape your wife in all 50 states.
Over the years there has been much progress made to promote and protect women’s rights. Regardless of this, there is still a lot of work that needs to be done. Still, nowhere in the world can women claim to have all the same opportunities and rights as men. The majority of the worlds poor are women. Within the same work, women earn 30-40% less pay than men. Women also continue to be victims of violence. Rape and domestic violence are still a significant cause of disability and death for women worldwide.
International women’s day gives fire to the #metoo movement that has worked to expose the men who exploit their power through bullying, harassing and sexually assaulting women. The social media hashtag #Metoo has helped empower women to break their silence and share their stories of discrimination, sexual harassment, and assault.
On International Women’s Day and every day, it’s important to recognize those who have come before us who have fought for women’s freedom, rights, and equality. It’s important to recognize the generations of abuse and trauma women have suffered and to recognize that we are in a position to heal this and create a future for our children where this inequality and violence does not continue behind closed doors. Acknowledge and recognize our history and commit to continuing the create a foundation of equality, safety, and liberation for future generations.
