5 Easy Steps to Organizing Your Closet

Hello Everyone!

Let me tell you, the past couple months the struggle has been real. I feel like I have been pulled in so many directions trying to get everything accomplished, but that’s the story of my life. I came to terms that I just have to deal with it and make every minute in the day count, which brings me to today’s post. A few weeks ago I had an event to go to and I couldn’t find my tan bodysuit anywhere. I triple checked my closet and nothing came up. I was devastated because I had the perfect outfit in mind and yes I know I’m a bit dramatic, but you know how it is when your heart is set on a certain look but you’re not able to carry it out.  I was pressed for time so I had to pick another look, which took more time. Irritated doesn’t even begin to describe how I was feeling at that time.

The following day when I looked into my closet, I instantly felt overwhelmed. My winter clothes were mixed with my summer clothes, and nothing was in order. Oh yeah, by the way, I ended up finding my bodysuit in between two dresses, which was literally at the beginning of my closet. Ugh, I thought to myself something needs to be done.  I need my closet to be fully functional, where I can open it and quickly find exactly what I’m looking for with ease. Let’s just say I needed help and I knew exactly who to call to give me advice. If any of you have the same struggle, don’t fret. I invited my good friend Kelly Dallaire, Professional Organizer, at NEAT Method on Bloom to give us 5 Easy Steps to organizing our closet. Last week I used her 5 easy steps and let me tell you it made a world of difference, her advice was on point. I’m a firm believer in trying it out before I share it with you all. Believe me these steps are going to change your world if you share the same struggle as I did.

5 Easy Steps to Organizing Your Closet

  1. Remove EVERYTHING from the space. I know this sounds crazy and overwhelming, but trust me it will help you purge* some items you no longer want/need.This will allow you to be able to see the full space that you’re working with.
  2. Switch out those bulky plastic hangers for velvet non-slip hangers. They’re space saving, better for your clothes, and look super sleek. You can find them for $10.00/box of 30 at Costco.
  3. As you place your clothes back in your closet, hang them front-facing the door so as you open your closet (or walk into) you are looking at the front of your clothes.
  4. The next step is preference. Some people prefer to hang their clothes by sleeve-length or some prefer to color-code. I like to do both because I have a small closet, and I’m a little extreme.
  5. Shoes – If it’s possible, try to organize your shoes in a way that allows you to see them all.
    1. Purchase a shoe rack. You can usually find one at any retailer that sells home goods/closet organizers. I found mine at Goodwill for $5. I’m all about those thrifty deals!
    2. If you’re like my girlfriend and you tend to “collect” shoes, you’ll want to separate your “everyday” shoes from your “special” pairs to save space. Again, you can typically find clear plastic shoe boxes with lids at any retail store where storage bins are sold. The bins are see through and they’re good for stacking. This is great so you can still see those pretty purchases while keeping them in like-new condition and free from dust.
    3. Helpful tip – display your shoes toe-out to see them better when trying to decide which to wear.

*Purging is not always necessary. Remember, by organizing your closet you are creating more space and a more functional space. If you do decide to do some purging, consider donating your gently-used items. You’ll be happy you did! 🙂
